What is a D.O.?
A D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) is a fully licensed medical doctor, licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication. D.O.s receive additional training during medical school in the musculoskeletal system—your body's interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. This additional training provides the physician with a better understanding of how illness or injury affects your whole body.
Because of this training, many D.O.s focus their medical careers on Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics. However, you will find D.O.s in all specialties of medicine, including surgery, E.R., and psychiatry.
